More and more people in the UK could be struggling with debt as official figures show 2.5 million are unemployed. The Office of National Statistics (ONS) figures show an increase of 43000 taking the jobless total to its highest level since 1994. Despite more people being out of work, fewer are claiming jobseekers allowance with a fall of 32000 in March suggesting more people are relying on savings or building up debt problems. The number of people classed as economically inactive has reached the highest level since 1971. 8.16 million had given up seeking work, are a student or care for a sick relative and could soon need debt advice.
